Study on gender discrimination in the access to education: Evaluation of the need for and effectiveness of current measures in the Member States

Objectives: The aim of this study was to provide the Commission with independent information on: 1) The extent of gender discrimination in the access to education in European Union Member States; 2) Existing measures taken by Member States to tackle gender discrimination; and 3) The need for and the effectiveness of these measures. This study is expected to inform the Commission’s work on new initiatives to prevent and combat gender discrimination in the field of education. The findings from the study will feed into the Commission’s implementation report on the Directive 2004/113/EC. Even though education does not fall under the scope of Directive 2004/113/EC, access to education will be one of the issues covered in the Commission’s report that will be submitted to the Council and the Parliament.
