Objectives: This post-doctoral project is developed at the Centre of Social Studies (CES-UC) with periods of visit to the University of Durham (United Kingdom).

Funding Institution: FCT

Objectives: This interdisciplinary study aims to understand the several impacts of the developing process of a DNA database in a society such as the Portuguese, characterised by its low levels of trust in the State and in the judicial system. Our main goals are: (1) to produce knowledge for the definition of public policies on the use of genetic investigation for criminal investigation; (2) to contribute to the public debate and clarification of the civil society about this matter. We used different investigation techniques, such as individual interviews and thematic group discussions with several stakeholders: experts in genetics and law, police experts, magistrates, journalists, ordinary citizens and individuals convicted for crimes.
